This course is aimed at both experienced small scale salad growers and those who are thinking of starting a market garden and want to learn more about how to produce and sell salad all year. This course will be run by Ashley Wheeler at Trill Farm Garden, near Axminster. Ashley and Kate have run Trill Farm Garden, a 2.5 acre market garden rented on a larger organic farm, for 8 years. They grow mainly for local restaurants and cafes, and specialise in salad production and high value crops. The course will delve into the techniques and crop plans that are used at Trill Farm Garden to grow around 3 tonnes of salad a year. The production is very much centred around a solid cropping plan, which itself relies on good record keeping so that it can be adapted each year, learning from successes and failures from the previous years. Ashley will talk about propagation, bed preparation and planting as well as direct seed sowing. Much of the course will be based outdoors with opportunities to see and discuss different varieties used and techniques for harvesting. At Trill Farm Garden, choosing specific salad crops and varieties for certain times of the year has meant that they can produce salad all through the year. Knowing when to sow what makes things much easier, as most crops have a specific time of year at which they grow best and at which they suffer from fewer pests and diseases. All of this will be covered during the day. The day will also include a tour of the garden showing how salad growing fits into the whole growing system. Lunch will be provided by Chris Onions of the Old Dairy Kitchen at Trill Farm. For more information and to book visit: https://land-base.weebly.com/saladcourse.html

Ashley Wheeler has run Trill Farm Garden with his partner Kate for 8 years. Having been bought up on an organic smallholding he learnt a huge amount from his parents who run a box scheme in the 90's. He then went on to study Horticulture at Reading University and ended up finding an opportunity with Kate to rent 2.5 acres at Trill Farm to run their own market gardening business. They now sell salad and other vegetables and herbs to around 15 different restaurants, cafes and caterers almost all within 5 miles of the farm.
