Glebe Farm is looking for a trainee for 2017, the position will run from early April until the end of September. We are a 100 acre mixed organic farm, set in South Somerset between Langport and Somerton (about an hour south of Bristol), which has been run by the Walrond family for over 200 years. Most of our produce sells through our popular on site farm shop which stocks our veg and meat as well as other local and organic produce. We also supply several local restaurants and market stalls and do a few local markets ourselves.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, good humoured trainee who will get an, increasingly rare, chance to work on a truly mixed organic farm. As well as the market garden we keep 600 chickens for eggs, 140 ewes, 30 head of cattle and fair number of saddleback cross pigs. The trainee position will be mostly working alongside our grower in the market garden which currently covers about 2 acres outside with almost a quarter acre of no-dig protected cropping. All of which is mostly managed using hand tools. But as is the nature of mixed farming the trainee will be expected to get involved with all parts of the farm operation. In the 2017 season we are hoping to expand our outdoor vegetable production to supply our new on-site cafe which will be up and running by the summer.
The trainee will be offered an informal but comprehensive programme covering all aspects of protected and outdoor vegetable production from crop planning, rotations and green manures to sowing, weed management, transplanting, harvesting, packing and marketing. As well as gaining knowledge and competence in a broad range of animal husbandry and land management skills. The trainee can also choose to sign themselves up to the Soil Association Future Growers scheme.
In return for 25-30 hours work a week we can offer accommodation in a caravan/mobile home, £50 to £100 a week (negotiable) and vegetables from the farm, plus lunch is provided every working day.
Please email thewalronds[email protected] if you are interested in the position with any relevant experience you have, what skills you think you will be able to bring to the farm and what you hope to gain out of the traineeship.
The application deadline is 31/01/2017. We will then be having the interviews early February.
If you want any further information or have any enquiries please don't hesitate to email [email protected] or call 01458 23002.
Happy new year,
