Saving our genetic diversity
Garden Organic’s Heritage Seed Library (HSL), was established in direct response to the significant loss of global food crops and the resultant decline of genetic diversity as well as to counteract changes to European seed legislation making many older varieties commercially unviable. HSL currently maintains a living library of around 800 heritage vegetable varieties. Each year the HSL team grow a number of these varieties at Garden Organic’s headquarters at Ryton Organic Gardens in Warwickshire, in order to harvest and save the seed. Some seed is retained for the HSL collection but the majority is shared with growers and gardeners across the country.
HSL is run entirely organically. It is the only vegetable collection registered with Plant Heritage (the National Council for the Conservation of Plants & Gardens, NCCPG) and the only collection that shares its seed with growers and that actively promotes and supports seed saving and sharing.
We are now looking for a new Head of HSL to join our team, to protect, perpetuate and develop our unique collection.
