The 11th OGA AGM – a time for change

The OGA launches a consultation on a future vision and issues a call for new blood for the committee.

A vision for the future direction and activity of the OGA is to be circulated to the membership for comment and debate.  Early responses will be reported to the 2018 AGM to be held at Abbey Home Farm on Saturday March 17th but it is intended to make this an on-going conversation with the membership.

The “Refreshed Strategy for the OGA” document covers 3 main areas: People & Skills; Market & Supply Chain Development; and Representation. It also includes a number of questions intended to start the conversation.  There will also be a SurveyMonkey survey if people wish to respond on-line and threads will be started on the OGA Forum on our website.

This call for engagement coincides with potentially significant changes to the committee as a result of a number of long-standing officers standing down at the AGM.  The most significant of these is Alan Schofield, our incredibly dedicated and hard-working Chair since the ‘new’ OGA was established.

Other vacancies will be created by Debra Schofield standing down as Treasurer and Roger Hitchings standing down as Secretary.  Phil Sumption will also be leaving the committee although he will be continuing as Editor of the Organic Grower to the relief of the committee.

A further exciting development is the intention to convert the current unincorporated organisation into a company limited by guarantee, a move that should make it easier to apply for and receive external funding.  This would in turn allow the OGA to create one or two part-time funded positions with a focus on membership administration, fund-raising and website development.

There is an urgent need for replacements with energy and vision as this represents something of a cross roads for the OGA.  There is an exciting future ahead for the OGA given the changes that are in the wind but we need new blood to come in and pick up the baton.

If anyone is interested or knows someone who could be interested please contact Roger Hitchings at [email protected] for more information.  We are open to expressions of interest from outside of the present membership.  The only reward is free membership for the duration of service on the committee.
