Amidst this years dock campaign, late due to wet conditions. Anybody on best guesses on seed dispersal distance? Stuff online a bit woolley about wind dispersal but increasingly gusty conditions of recent seasons not helping I’m sure. We used to assume plants in hedge/fringe areas wouldn’t spread much, now not so sure.

Any favourites tools anybody? Familiar with Lazy Dock fork, metal handles and welding!

(for anyone who hasnt read it Tolly’s Dock article in an earlier OG pretty good still)

    Hi Adam,

have you seen this recent report from FiBL (via ORC)? http://www.organicresearchcentre.com/manage/authincludes/article_uploads/ORC-FiBL_Dock-control.pdf

Looks like a pretty thorough assessment of dock control.

Re wind – it says seeds are only carried a few metres by wind. I wonder whether there’s more seed dispersal due to machinery (e.g. spreading via tractor tyres or mowing) than people realise…? A few metres of wind dispersal can be quite significant, especially if it’s moving seeds into a high traffic area.

Ultimately, though, the 80 year dock seed viability + upto 60,000 seeds per plant + regular cultivations for tractor-based veg growing means who knows where the seeds have come from or spread to in the last 80 years? Another reason to shift more of your land to no-dig…?

    Nice one,
